What you are paying for
The fee covers a defined cell doing a defined task for a defined term. Good contracts say what throughput, what uptime, which part numbers, and what happens when the part changes. Weak contracts say 'a robot' and leave every exception to a variation order.
Maintenance and software updates are the usual reason to prefer the model. You are buying a provider who already knows that cell, rather than adding another asset your team has to learn from a manual.
What stays with the factory
The provider cannot fix an empty infeed, a case the gripper was never shown, or a pallet that arrives broken. Those stay yours. So do power, air, floor space, and the safety obligations of occupying the building. Read the responsibility split before comparing a monthly number with a purchase price.
End of term should be in the first conversation. Does the cell stay, leave, or convert to a purchase, and who owns the programs and the fixtures if you part ways?
When the model fits
It fits when capital is better spent elsewhere, when you want the provider on the hook for a scoped performance target, or when you are not ready to own a technology your team has never run. It fits poorly when the cell will run hard and unchanged for many years. In that case ownership is usually the cheaper structure.
We price the technical scope first, then show ownership and service against the same cell so the comparison is real.

What does RaaS mean in robotics?
RaaS means robot as a service: using a robot cell under a service contract rather than buying it as capital equipment. The details of ownership, uptime, and end of term are whatever the contract says.
Is robot as a service a lease?
It can resemble a lease, but a lease mainly finances the asset. A service contract should also say who maintains the cell and what performance is included. If it does not, you have a payment plan, not a service.
Who owns the robot in a RaaS contract?
Often the provider, until the term ends or a buyout is exercised. Confirm it. Some deals transfer title earlier than the sales conversation implied.
What happens if our product changes?
A new part family is usually a change to the scope: gripper, vision, program, and sometimes cycle time. Assume it is a variation unless the contract lists those parts.
